A vicious circle starts when you do not address boredom when it strikes. While it is perfectly normal for everyone to get bored once in a while, once it becomes chronic it is asking for trouble. What starts as boredom ends in depression and lack of self-esteem? Nip the problem in the bud before it raises its ugly head.
I never want to be bored because I do not like the feeling of doing nothing and end up eating excessively without control. A lot of research revealed that this kind of eating is called emotional eating. We often turn to food for comfort and that is why when bored the easiest thing to counter it is to eat your favorite food. This is an unhealthy habit that must be stopped before it becomes a monster and overtakes your entire life.
Here are a few tips to counter mindless eating
- Step out: Every time the urge to snack due to boredom arises, just step out for a stroll or a walk. A change of scene will not only kill the boredom but also the urge to binge eat. You will come back with more focus and clarity.
- Read a gripping novel: Stories that appeal to our sense of mystery and problem solving always, and I repeat always, keep our mind so engaged that people often lose the sense of time and place. Make it a habit to carry such mystery novels handy as they will keep boredom away and that in turn will keep the desires of the tongue at bay.
- Talk to a friend: Call and catch up with a friend; it will lighten the mood and distract the mind from the evil siblings in the form of boredom and junk eating.
It is not going to be easy to give up eating when bored but you must not give up because it will otherwise affect your health adversely.
